January 11 (Renewables Now) - French energy major Total SA (EPA:FP) has taken over anaerobic digestion (AD) specialist Fonroche Biogaz in a drive to further strengthen its presence in the renewable gas market.

With a headcount of 85, Fonroche Biogaz is engaged in the design, construction and operation of AD units. The firm’s installed capacity equals almost 500 GWh and it holds a 10%-plus share of the domestic renewable gas market, according to the announcement.

Philippe Sauquet, president of Gas, Renewables & Power at Total, commented that the group intends to produce 1.5 TWh of biomethane annually by 2025 and between 4 TWh and 6 TWh per year by the end of the decade.

Total is already affiliated with sector players Methanergy, PitPoint BV and Clean Energy in Benelux and the US, respectively. Last month, the group also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Clean Energy to set up a USD-100-million (EUR 82m) joint venture to develop renewable gas plants in the US.
