Toshiba to ship 180 MW of turbines for Indonesian geothermal plant

Jul 16, 2014 - Japanese diversified manufacturer Toshiba Corp (TYO:6502) said today it will supply 180 MW of steam turbines and generators (STGs) for the 330-MW Sarulla geothermal scheme in Indonesia.

As part of the deal, Toshiba will deliver three STGs of 60 MW each for the plant, which is currently under construction on the island of Sumatra. The contract was awarded by project owner Sarulla Operations Ltd, in which Japan’s Kyushu Electric Power Co (TYO:9508) and Itochu Corp (TYO:8001) each own a 25% stake. US-based Ormat Technologies Inc (NYSE:ORA) holds 12.75%, while the remaining interest is in the hands of power generation company PT Medco Power Indonesia. Hyundai Engineering and Construction is the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

Toshiba expects to start deliveries of the STGs in July 2015, while the plant is planned to be operational in November 2016.

The USD-1.6-billion (EUR 1.2bn) geothermal complex will be developed in phases. Its output will be sold to local utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara under a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
