Grid operators EirGrid in Ireland and SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland) have confirmed that the grid on the island can handle up to 65% variable renewables “at any given time”.
A five-month trial, during which Ireland reached several wind power generation records, has been successfully completed, EirGrid said last week. The current wind peak record is 3,655 MW generation, recorded on March 14.
“We look forward to continuing progress towards 75% variable renewable energy on the grid over the coming months and years,” commented EirGrid’s head of Operations, Planning & Innovation, Robin McCormick.
