to-the-point: Engie trades coal for energy storage at Rugeley

French energy group Engie (EPA:ENGI) has submitted plans to build a giant battery storage farm on the former Rugeley coal plant, Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom said on Twitter.

The Rugeley coal power station in Staffordshire ceased market operations, switching off its generation unit on June 8 this year.

The closure was announced in February and motivated by the deterioration in market conditions for UK coal-fired power generation as well as by Engie’s strategy to move towards a less carbon-intensive energy system.

In May this year, Engie bought an 80% interest in US battery storage firm Green Charge Networks.
