June 10 (Renewables Now) - German electric utility EnBW Energie Baden-Wuerttemberg AG (ETR:EBK) and partner Vorarlberger Illwerke (VIW) last week opened the 360-MW Obervermunt II pumped-storage power plant in Montafon, Austria.

The facility features two turbines and two pumps and uses the existing water reservoirs Lake Silvretta and Lake Vermunt. The project was realised in four and a half years, according to EnBW’s announcement.

Obervermunt II is the third pumped-storage project executed by EnBW and VIW over the past 10 years, the other two being Rellswerk and Kopswerk II. The new plant is located at the end of an 800-metre-long tunnel inside the Silvretta Massif.
