Switzerland-based power and automation technology group ABB Ltd (VTX:ABBN) said on Friday it has ordered what it describes as "the world's most advanced cable-laying vessel".
The ship, designed to boost the capacity and flexibility of the company's submarine cable business, is expected to be delivered in 2017. It will be custom-built to ABB specifications and will use many of the group's own marine technologies. The investment in the vessels, which will be constructed at Norway's Kleven shipyard, was not disclosed.
ABB's track record in high-voltage cable systems includes applications such as integration of renewables, city centre in-feeds, oil and gas platform power supplies and subsea interconnections, according to the announcement.
