Terna to expand Italy-Greece power interconnector to 1 GW

Italian grid operator Terna SpA (BIT:TRN) will invest EUR 750 million (USD 783m) to double the power exchange capacity through the Italy-Greece interconnector to 1 GW and thus help integrate more renewables into the two countries.

The company announced its intentions last week during a celebration of the subsea cable network’s 20th anniversary.

More specifically, Terna’s plan envisages the construction of a new interconnector to the national electricity grid that will extend the existing 400-kV DC connection with the capacity to transfer 500 MW of electricity. Work on the new 500-MW link, with a length of 200 km, is set to begin next year, while commercial operations are planned to be achieved in 2030.

The project will be realised as part of Italy’s national electricity grid development plan, which foresees EUR 18.1 billion of investments over the next decade.

The bi-directional interconnection line between Italy and Greece has carried about 40 billion kWh of electricity since its commissioning in mid-2002.
