Tata Power to bring online 229 MW of S African wind farms by 2017 - report

Jun 3, 2014 - Indian power producer Tata Power (BOM:500400) expects to switch on 229 MW of wind farms in South Africa by fiscal 2016/17, the Press Trust of India said on Sunday, citing the firm's managing director Anil Sardana.

Tata Power is developing the 134.4-MW Amakhala Emoyeni and the 94.8-MW Tsitsikamma projects as a joint venture with South African mining group Exxaro Resources Ltd (JNB:EXX). The joint entity, Cennergi Pty Ltd, has already signed 20-year power purchase agreements with local utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. They will become valid from the date when the plants reach commercial operations.

Cennergi won a preferred bidder status for the two projects in Eastern Cape province in May 2012, as part of the second round of South Africa’s Renewable Energy Procurement Programme (REIPP).

Tata Power has an installed power capacity of 8,560 MW. It is currently working on a 126-MW hydropower plant project with the government of Bhutan and a 185-MW hydropower scheme in Georgia.
