Japan's Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (TYO:5802) will supply an offshore export cable for the 576-MW Gwynt y Mor wind farm off the coast of North Wales.
The Japanese company said today it has received the contract from the owner of the transmission link to the wind farm, Gwynt y Mor OFTO Plc, which is a consortium of Balfour Beatty and Equitix.
The 132-kV cable will carry power from the wind power plant, situated about 15 km (9.3m) off the coast, to the onshore grid. It is intended to improve the reliability of the transmission asset and optimise the wind farm availability.
The 160-turbine wind farm, owned by RWE AG (ETR:RWE) and partners, has two offshore substation platforms that are connected to the shore by four subsea export cables of about 20 km.
Gwynt y Mor was commissioned in 2015 and can produce enough power for about 400,000 homes. Last year seabed rights were awarded for an extension project, called Awel y Mor.
