Norwegian state-owned utility Statkraft has agreed to buy electricity and capacity certificates from soon-to-be completed wind projects in France, totalling 20 MW.
Under two separate power purchase agreements (PPAs), both with a three-year term, Statkraft will buy power from the 10-MW Waldwisse and 10-MW Launstroff wind parks. The assets are owned by renewables developer Boreas, which took care of their development and construction and will also operate the plants following completion.
The two wind parks are located in Moselle department, in the northeastern French region of Lorraine, each consisting of four Nordex N100 turbines. They are scheduled to be put on stream in December 2018 and January 2019, respectively. Statkraft will control them remotely to “ensure the automatic downregulation of production during negative price events.”
The Norwegian group has been operating in France for over 15 years now. Commenting on the French market, Laurent Talbot, head of sales & new products France at Statkraft said: "The transition from feed-in-tariffs to direct marketing is now well underway in France.”
Last month, President Emmanuel Macron announced that a threefold increase is planned in onshore wind by 2030, in line with the country’s energy transition agenda. Moving away from fossil fuels remains a key objective so that France can in 2050 rely completely on zero-carbon energy.
