SSE Renewables, a unit of UK utility SSE plc (LON:SSE), and its partner FuturEnergy Ireland have secured planning permission for a 60-MW wind farm project in Ireland’s County Donegal.
The permit was awarded by the Irish national independent planning body An Bord Pleanala, SSE Renewables said on Monday.
The Drumnahough wind project calls for the construction of 12 turbines with a maximum tip height of 167.5 metres at a site in the rural uplands of Donegal, within the townlands of Treankeel, Meenadaura, Carrickalangan and Cark. Once up and running, the plant is expected to produce enough electricity to cover the power consumption of around 40,000 homes.
The project is a 50/50 partnership between FuturEnergy Ireland and SSE Renewables and will see the duo invest a total of roughly EUR 60 million (USD 59.8m). The SSE unit will lead the construction activities and will take care of the wind farm’s operations.
Meanwhile in County Donegal, SSE Renewables and FuturEnergy are building the 30-MW Lenalea wind farm, which is due to reach commercial operations in late 2023. Building works on the project were initiated in June.
