SSE Renewables, part of UK utility SSE plc (LON:SSE), and Spain’s Acciona Energia are seeking an offshore location license (OLL) for offshore wind development rights concerning a site in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea.
The partners have applied for the area known as 60.E.4, located 85 km (52.8 miles) from the shore and with water depths of up to 58 m (190 ft), SSE Renewables said on Monday.
If they secure the license, the SSE subsidiary and Acciona will jointly develop the offshore wind project. They will work on the scheme through a 50/50 joint venture (JV) they agreed to set up last summer with the goal of exploring offshore wind opportunities in Poland.
“This site has excellent wind resource, but that comes with some challenges, such as the distance to shore and relatively deep water”, said Simon Redfern, SSE Renewables’ Bid Director.
Poland has a target of installing 5.9 GW of offshore wind by 2030 and 11 GW by 2040.
Acciona Energia is the renewables subsidiary of Spanish infrastructure construction group Acciona SA (BME:ANA). The company owns and operates over 100 MW of onshore wind parks in Poland and also has a development pipeline in the country.
