Dutch offshore contractor SPT Offshore on Monday presented a new concept for suction pile foundations for wind turbines.
The company is currently ironing out the design and is working towards a demonstration in the next 12 months. The technology features three or four suction piles, a mono tubular and a star shaped transition piece. SPT Offshore is yet to determine whether the transition component should be made of steel or concrete.
The company says suction piles are suitable for almost all of the North Sea and most shallow water locations around the world with sandy, clayey or layered soils.
According to the announcement, its new concept brings together the advantages of mono tubulars which are about three times cheaper to fabricate than jackets, and suction piles' advantages of fast installation and being a virtually noise-free technique.
