Spanish Gamesa to supply 60 wind turbines in California

(ADPnews) - Dec 22, 2010 - Spanish wind energy company Gamesa (MCE:GAM) said on Monday it won an order to supply 120 MW of wind turbines for a California wind farm project developed by Canadian renewable energy firm Western Wind Energy Corp (CVE:WND).

Beginning in April 2011, Gamesa will deliver 60 of its G8X 2 MW turbines for the Windstar wind farm, located at the Tehachapi mountain pass. All of the generators, designed for hot weather, will be mounted on towers of 67 metres (220 feet). As part of the deal, the company will provide operation and maintenance services for the coming 10 years.

Gamesa has been present in the US since 2005 and now operates two manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania with a capacity to produce more than 1,000 MW annually. Some 22% of its global wind turbine revenues come from the US, with sales in the country seen to increase by an average of 15% a year between 2009 and 2013.

Output from the Windstar project will be sold to US utility Southern California Edison (SCE) under a 20-year power purchase deal. Last week Western Wind announced it secured financing of CAD 249 million (USD 246m/EUR 187m) to complete the construction of the project.
