December 29 (Renewables Now) - Spain exceeded EU-mandated renewable energy and energy efficiency targets set for 2020, the Spanish ministry for the ecological transition said.

The country achieved a 21.2% share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption last year, surpassing the target of 20% that was established for Spain in the renewable energy directive. The ministry said that Spain was able to do so thanks to the increase in clean energy production coupled with lower demand caused by the pandemic.

The EU energy efficiency target of 20% for 2020 was also surpassed, with Spaniards achieving 35.4% of energy savings.

The share of renewables in final energy consumption in transport was at 9.54% in 2020, below the target of 10%, the ministry said.
