November 24 (Renewables Now) - US wholesale energy provider Southern Power today announced the start of commercial operation of the 118-MW Glass Sands Wind Facility in Murray County, Oklahoma.

The subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO) acquired this 28-turbine wind project from Steelhead Americas, the North American development arm of Danish wind turbine maker Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS), in December 2020.

The wind park, which features Vestas hardware, will sell its generated electricity and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) under a power purchase agreement (PPA) with e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN).

Now, Southern Power has over 2,534 MW of wind generation including Glass Sands, which is its 15th wind farm overall and fifth in the state of Oklahoma. When also taking into account the company’s solar assets, its total renewables fleet amounts to 4,930 MW.
