April 21 (Renewables Now) - US wholesale energy provider Southern Power has acquired a 118-MW under-construction wind park in Oklahoma from Steelhead Americas, the North American development unit of Vestas Wind Systems A/S (CPH:VWS).

The Glass Sands wind park, located in Murray County, will consist of 28 turbines supplied by Vestas. The wind farm is expected to start commercial operation in the fourth quarter of this year, Southern Power said on Tuesday.

Once in operation, it will sell the output and associated renewable energy credits to e-commerce giant Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) under a power purchase agreement (PPA). The latter this week announced contracts totalling roughly 1.4 GW of wind and solar power worldwide.

This is the 15th wind project acquired by Southern Power. The subsidiary of US utility Southern Company (NYSE:SO) now has a renewable energy portfolio with a total capacity of about 4.93 GW.
