Sonnen kicks off production at Aussie battery plant

German energy storage group Sonnen has officially launched operations at its new battery assembly factory in a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia.

Located at the former GM Holden car plant in Elizabeth, the facility is expected to manufacture 10,000 home batteries per year in order to meet the growing demand in that part of the world, including on the Australian market and in the Asia Pacific region. Its start-up was marked by an official ceremony attended by South Australia’s premier Steve Marshall and energy minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan, it was announced on Twitter on Tuesday.

The German manufacturer calculates the factory would create up to 430 jobs in South Australia as it ramps up production to match the demand from the state’s AUD-100-million (USD 72.3m/EUR 64m) Home Battery Scheme. The programme, also backed by an additional AUD 100 million by the Clean Energy Finance Corp (CEFC), was opened last month and will subsidise the installation of home battery systems by 40,000 households.
