November 22 (Renewables Now) - SMA Solar Technology AG (ETR:S92) said on Monday that it is set to supply battery inverters for 117 MW of energy storage systems that German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) wants to virtually couple with its run-of-river hydroelectric stations along the Mosel river in Germany.

RWE is building a 45-MW battery at its power plant in Lingen, Lower Saxony, and a 72-MW storage unit in Werne in North Rhine-Westphalia. With the coupling process, the total capacity of the Werne and Lingen batteries will grow by another 15%, RWE and SMA Solar stated.

Overall, the mega-battery project will use 420 lithium-ion battery racks housed in 47 overseas shipping containers. SMA Solar will deliver 47 battery inverters of the Sunny Central Storage UP 3450 brand to be installed at the sites, the German technology company said.

The batteries are expected to commence operations at the end of 2022.
