Cork, Ireland-based, floating wind-focused developer Simply Blue Group is partnering with UK’s Marine Power Systems (MPS) to participate in Crown Estate Scotland’s Innovation and Targeted Oil and Gas (INTOG) leasing round with a 100-MW project.
The proposed project envisages the installation of six turbines on MPS' tension legged floating platform, called PelaFlex, in water depths of between 60 and 100 metres.
According to an announcement today, Simply Blue has chosen MPS as the preferred technology partner because its platform offers significantly reduced system mass and a smaller mooring footprint than comparative technologies, as well as a decentralised logistics model that optimises local content.
The scheme is part of Simply Blue’s Nomadic Offshore Wind project, launched early in 2022. According to the company’s website, Nomadic Offshore Wind is of up to 500 MW and is located between Northern Ireland and Islay, Inner Southern Hebrides of Scotland.
The INTOG leasing round seeks to support up to 5.7 GW of projects intended to reduce emissions from oil and gas production, as well as up to 500 MW of commercialisation and innovation projects. The leasing round was launched in August.
