Siemens Metals starts 10-year cooperation with LanzaTech

Jun 20, 2013 - German Siemens (ETR:SIE) said on Wednesday its Siemens Metals Technologies unit had entered into a 10-year cooperation with New Zealand-based green technology firm LanzaTech.

The collaboration will take advantage of the fermentation technology, developed by LanzaTech, transforming carbon-rich off-gases generated by the steel industry into low carbon bioethanol and other platform chemicals.

The two companies will thus partner on process integration and optimisation as well as on the marketing and realisation of customer projects.

LanzaTech's technology re-uses the off-gases from converter, coking plant or blast furnace processes as nutrients and a source of energy. The patented biological fermentation process allows steel plant operators to make use of the chemical energy contained in off-gases for the eco-friendly production of bioethanol or other basic chemicals such as acetic acid, acetone, isopropanol, n-butanol or 2.3-butanediol.

The global iron and steel industry is responsible for 6.7% of the worldwide carbon dioxite emissions.
