Portuguese power utility EDA- Electricidade dos Acores SA has awarded the contract for the installation of a battery-based energy storage system to German industrial giant Siemens AG (ETR:SIE) and Fluence, its business child with AES Corp (NYSE:AES).
Siemens, through its smart infrastructure business, and storage specialist Fluence will install a 15-MW system on the island of Terceira in the Azores archipelago.
The duo will set up Fluence’s Gridstack energy storage system with micro-grid control technology, which together will enable the island to incorporate more renewables, reduce the use of diesel-fuelled power and lift the clean share in electricity production to over 60% in the medium term.
Siemens said that the project will result in one of the largest stand-alone battery-based energy storage systems installed on an island in Europe.
The company expects to have the project finalised in 2021.
The Azores consist of nine islands, each with its own energy system, with Terceira being the second biggest power consumer among them, according to Siemens. The islands have significant potential to exploit renewables, mainly wind, hydro and geothermal power.
