Oct 19, 2012 - GL Renewables Certification yesterday said it had awarded a prototype certification to the new 6-MW offshore wind turbine prototype of German engineering group Siemens AG (ETR:SIE).
The certificate, which is required for testing of the turbine, confirms the compliance of the wind turbine design with the requirements of the executive order from the Danish Energy Authority, Germany-based GL Renewables said. Field testing of the new 154-metre (505 ft) rotor for the 6-MW turbine started in Denmark on October 6.
The SWT-6.0-154 direct-drive turbine, which has the world's longest rotor blades of 75 metres in length, is designed for sea applications. Each turbine can produce 25 million kWh of power, enough to supply 6,000 homes, according to the certification body.
GL Renewables will also conduct the type certification of the SWT-6.0-154 turbine and is now involved in the design evaluation process. A type certification is needed in many countries and is often required in international wind farm tender applications.
