Shipping co Meriaura to order cargo vessel running on green ammonia

Finnish marine logistics company Meriaura Oy, technology group Wartsila Corp (HEL:WRT1V) and Green NortH2 Energy Oy plan to work together on a project to build a cargo vessel that runs on green ammonia.

Under the terms outlined by a newly-signed letter of intent, Meriaura will order and operate the vessel, which will feature modular multifuel main engines provided by Wartsila. On the other hand, Green NortH2 Energy will be supplying green ammonia fuel.

The vessel is to be delivered in 2024 and is expected to begin using green ammonia in 2026. It is designed to trade in the heavy project cargo segment together with Meriaura’s existing open deck carriers.

Last month, Meriaura agreed to combine its operations with those of solar thermal systems provider Savosolar Oyj and biofuel producer VG EcoFuel Oy. In doing so, the three firms seek to meet the growing demand for renewable energy solutions and to fill the supply gap.
