Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) said today it has received a firm order from Ailes Marines SAS to supply turbines for the 496-MW Saint-Brieuc offshore wind project off the coast of France.
At the same time, Spanish utility Iberdrola SA (BME:IBE), which fully owns Ailes Marines, announced it has taken the final investment decision (FID) on the EUR-2.4-billion (USD 2.67bn) project it will construct off Brittany.
For its first offshore wind project in French waters, Siemens Gamesa will bring 62 units of SG 8.0-167 DD turbines. The order includes a ten-year contract for maintenance services.
The turbine maker said it will manufacture main components at a factory it will construct in the port of Le Havre. Components of the turbine foundations will be assembled in a dedicated 11-hectare (27.2 acres) site at the Brest polder, Iberdrola added.
The Saint-Brieuc wind farm will extend over a 75-square kilometre (29 sq miles) area located around 16 kilometres (9.9 miles) away from the coast. Construction is due to start in 2021.
The wind farm will be operational in 2023 when it will be capable of generating an estimated 1,820 GWh per year, or enough to meet annual electricity needs of around 835,000 consumers.
