Seattle City Light seeks to buy additional green energy

(ADPnews) - Sep 24, 2010 - Publicly-owned utility Seattle City Light is seeking 200,000 MWh a year of green energy as it strives to meet a requirement to source 15% of its power from sustainable sources by 2020.

A 100 MW wind farm with a capacity factor of 33% could fetch some 290,000 MWh a year.

In its request for proposals, the utility said it is looking for renewable energy credits for 15 years or more, long-term power purchase agreements, or equity stakes in green developments. It will only look into projects with installed capacity of at least 2 MW.

Proposals are to be submitted by October 20. Seattle City Light plans to complete the procedure in February 2011.

Currently, 91% of the company's electricity comes from hydroelectric generation, 4.4% from nuclear, 2.3% from wind power, and the rest comes from coal, gas and biomass sources.
