Seabased announced today it plans to install a 10-MW commercial wave energy park in France’s Brittany region that would become Europe’s first grid-connected, utility-scale project of its kind.
The Dublin-based wave energy company intends to deploy the soon-to-be-unveiled commercial system in Audierne Bay. The firm said it benefits from the support of the region, where it has been partnering with local energy conversion specialist ENAG. The latter was the one to build Seabased’s unique electrical system, according to the announcement.
“Seabased’s relationship with ENAG is important for us in terms of being compliant with the roadmap for industrial development for Brittany,” said Philippe Thieffry, manager of Bretagne Ocean Power, a central accelerator for marine renewable energy projects in the area. He explained that another reason for Seabased to receive an invite is that it meets the profile of a company nearing commercialisation and one that has performed some tests at full scale in real conditions.
More specifically, Seabased has completed two grid-connected wave power demonstration parks and is currently undertaking final system optimisation and third-party certification before full commercialisation.
In Brittany, a 2-MW wave power plant will be installed in the pilot phase of the project, which will later be scaled up to 10 MW and hooked to the grid.
