ScottishPower Renewables said on Tuesday it has commenced construction of the 239-MW Kilgallioch wind farm in Scotland that will require a total investment of GBP 300 million (USD 468m/EUR 424m).
The company, which is part of Spain’s Iberdrola (BME:IBE), is currently working on tracks across the site that will link the 96 Gamesa turbines to be erected there. The main construction contractor for the project is Nortshtone Ltd.
The wind park will take up an area of 32 sq km (344.4 sq ft) within both South Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway Council boundaries.
“This will be ScottishPower Renewables’ second largest wind farm, and the third largest overall in the UK,” said Stuart Mason, construction director at ScottishPower Renewables. At present, the company has over 1.5 GW of installed onshore wind capacity in the UK, he added.
ScottishPower expects the first turbines to be delivered next February and first power to be produced in November 2016. The wind park is seen to be up and running during the first half of 2017. It will be able to power the equivalent of 130,000 homes annually, the company noted.
The local community will benefit from a roughly GBP-30-million fund over the anticipated 25-year lifespan of the project.
