Aug 23, 2012 - Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond today said that local Steel Engineering would build a 30-kW tidal turbine to be installed by Nova Innovation between the Yell and Unst islands, the northernmost of the inhabited British Isles.
The facility will supply electricity to an ice plant and industrial estate. The North Yell community in Shetland, which will own the installation, earlier pocketed a GBP-150,000 (USD 238,000/EUR 189,600) grant from the Scottish government for the project. The tidal turbine has a horizontal axis, three-bladed rotor.
At the same time, Alex Salmond unveiled the opening of The Renewable Energy Skills Training Academy (TRESTA) to be operated by Steel Engineering. The academy will train 60 apprentices a year in various renewable energy areas to support Scotland's ambitious green energy goals.
In May 2011 the Scottish government announced that the country's 2020 renewable energy target had been raised to 100% from the previous 80%. By the end of the decade, the country intends to source from renewables as much power as it consumes.
