South Korean steel manufacturer SeAH Steel Holdings (KRX:003030) has been granted planning approval for the construction of its GBP-300-million (USD 370.2m/EUR 351.7m) monopile factory in Teesside, England, its UK unit said today.
The facility will be built at the Teesside Freeport and will be able to produce between 100 and 150 monopiles annually. Touted as the largest monopile plant for offshore wind turbines, the plant is expected to be fully operational in 2024.
The production site will offer 1.13 million sq ft of space for the manufacturing of up to 120-metre-long monopiles. Construction activities are due to start next month. The extra-large monopiles coming out of the factory will be transported to Teesworks’ new South Bank Quay facility and then head to the North Sea.
K2 Consultancy has been hired as project manager, construction manager and cost consultant.
SeaH’s British subsidiary SeAH Wind Ltd initially planned to build the huge production complex within the Able Marine Energy Park on the Humber. In July 2021, the manufacturer secured funding from the UK government for the project, which will be the South Korean group's first such resource outside its home country.
