S Korean waste-to-power project using Ballard fuel cells comes on stream

Oct 27, 2011 - Canadian fuel cell products maker Ballard Power Systems (TSE:BLD) said today that a demonstration waste-to-energy plant in South Korea using its hydrogen fuel cell technology had come on stream.

GS Platech, a unit of South Korean petroleum refiner GS Caltex, developed the project, which combines plasma gasification and fuel cells. The facility can produce enough hydrogen to generate 50 kW of power. Ballard's backup power system arm Dantherm Power has provided fuel cell units for the power system fuelled by the produced hydrogen, the company said.

GS Platech plans to further promote the solution globally. The project, supported by the Canadian government, represents a national research project of the Korean Ministry of Knowledge and Economy.
