RWE to boost NRW renewable energy capacity to 200 MW by 2014

Sep 5, 2011 - German utility RWE AG (ETR:RWE) announced today that it plans to raise its renewable energy capacities in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to 200 MW by 2014 from currently 120 MW.

The company aims to raise its production capacities from renewable energy sources to up to 500 MW by 2020, RWE said.

Therefore, the utility will focus primarily on growth in the wind energy and biogas segments.

RWE intends to launch the construction of a 20 MW wind power plant in the Titz region in 2011. The plant is expected to be supplying clean electricity in the summer of 2012. The company also plans to build a wind power plant, which will consist of three wind turbines each with a capacity of 3 MW, in the Juechen region.

The investment in the two plants will stand at around EUR 60 million (USD 84.5m), RWE said.

RWE Innogy, the utility's renewable energy arm, expects to receive the respective approvals for the two plants in the autumn of 2011.

In addition, RWE intends to invest around EUR 13 million in the construction of a 7.4 MW biogas plant in Bergheim Paffendorf.
