German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) said today it has begun the construction of a 28.5-MW wind project in Lower Saxony that will expand the capacity of the existing Bartelsdorf wind farm between Hamburg and Bremen to a total of 60.5 MW.
As part of the project, five Nordex turbines will be set up in the district of Rotenburg to bring the total number of turbines in the entire wind farm to 21.
Like at other locations, RWE is cooperating with local partners in the implementation of this project with two of the new machines to be operated by local citizens' cooperative Buergergesellschaft Heidland Wind GmbH & Co. KG and the other three by RWE.
Once the new turbines are operational as early as next year, the expanded wind park will be capable of generating enough clean power to supply more than 38,000 households.
The project received the green light from the Federal Network Agency in March.
The Bartelsdorf 2 project is the 32nd wind farm that RWE is building in Lower Saxony. When completed, the total capacity of the company's onshore wind farms in the state will grow to around 300 MW.
