RWE secures 50 MW/400 MWh storage project in Australian tender

German energy group RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has been awarded a 50 MW/400 MWh long-duration lithium-ion battery storage project in a renewable energy tender in New South Wales.

RWE’s project was successful along with three renewable generation schemes totalling 1,395 MW in the inaugural auction under New South Wales’ roadmap to replace retiring coal-fired generation with renewables, supported by long-duration storage.

The German company said today that it is working toward a final investment decision on the project in the next 12 months.

The storage facility will be located next to RWE’s existing 249-MW Limondale solar farm that began full commercial operation in 2021. It will in this way make use of existing grid infrastructure.

RWE added the project is a step towards its ambition to build 3 GW of battery storage systems by 2030. Currently, the company operates 300 MW/ 380 MWh of utility-scale batteries and is completing another more than 900 MW/2,300 MWh globally.
