German energy company RWE AG (ETR:RWE) has commissioned a 12-MW wind farm in Nowy Staw, Poland's northern Pomeranian province, to power the three breweries of Kompania Piwowarska under a power purchase agreement (PPA), the companies said on Monday.
The Lech Nowy Staw 3 farm, named after Kompania Piwowarska's best-known beer brand Lech, will provide 54% of the electricity necessary for producing beer in Dojlidy Browar Bialystok, Lech Browary Wielkopolski and Tyskie Browary Ksiazece. The remaining 46% is supplied by existing wind farms in Nowy Staw.
Since 2021, 100% of the electricity demand of Kompania Piwowarska's breweries has been covered by wind energy supplied by RWE under a PPA concluded in 2019 for the Lech Nowy Staw wind farm.
Kompania Piwowarska, owned by Japan's Asahi Group, has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 66% since 2019 thanks to the agreement with RWE, CEO Igor Tikhonov said in the joint press release. The company is on track to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of the decade, he added.
Poland is one of RWE's main renewable energy markets in Europe, where it owns onshore wind farms with a capacity of over 470 MW. In 2022, it diversified its Polish portfolio by acquiring 3 GW of solar projects of Polish photovoltaic developer Alpha Solar.
