RWE Renewables UK on Monday said it is teaming up with German companies Stadtwerke Muenchen and Siemens Financial Services on an offshore wind project that will expand the 576-MW Gwynt y Mor wind farm off the North Wales coast.
The renewable energy unit of German utility RWE AG (ETR:RWE) will hold 60% of the new wind park, to be called Awel y Môr Offshore Wind Farm. Communal company Stadtwerke München will own a 30% stake, while the financing arm of Siemens AG (ETR: SIE) will account for the remaining 10%.
RWE is leading the development of the project and has inked an agreement for an offshore wind lease with the Crown Estate for an area of about 106 sq km ( 40.9 sq miles) located west of the existing wind park. Work on the project is still at a very early stage, with the exact size and capacity of the project to be determined in the future.
"Over the coming months, we will start development and planning activities where possible and in line with Government guidance,” project manager Tamsyn Rowe commented.
The Gwynt y Môr Wind Farm was commissioned in 2015 and produces enough power for about 400,000 homes.
