Denmark’s Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) has teamed up with two Japanese companies to develop large-scale offshore wind projects off the Akita prefecture and bid in Japan’s upcoming offshore wind auction.
The offshore wind major said it has formed a consortium with Japan Wind Development Co (JWD) and Eurus Energy to promote projects at two designated sites -- the Noshiro/Mitane/Oga Offshore Wind Farm and the Yurihonjo Offshore Wind Farm.
The auction guidelines put the grid capacity for the Noshiro City, Mitane Town and Oga City at 415 MW, and 730 MW for Yurihonjo City, Ørsted said.
JWD has been maturing the two sites since 2017, carrying out wind measurements, seabed surveys and environmental impact assessments. The turbines for both wind farms will be installed on bottom-fixed foundations. The projects are now moving through the permitting process, the Danish company said.
Ørsted added that is relying on the combined strength of all three players -- JWD and Eurus Energy bring their experience in onshore wind and knowledge of the Japanese power market and supply chain -- to bring the projects to success.
Japan’s first offshore wind auction round closes on May 27, 2021. The Japanese government offered four sites for bidding in the maiden round.
