Ørsted A/S (CPH:ORSTED) and its partner Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) have launched a 200-MW project in response to a call for offshore wind power capacity in Connecticut.
The project, called Constitution wind, was proposed by Bay State Wind, the 50/50 partnership between Ørsted and the New England transmission company, it was announced on Monday. The plant will be installed in federal waters near the coast of New London and if constructed is seen to generate power for around 100,000 households.
Ørsted will develop and build the offshore generation and transmission assets, while Eversource will take care of the onshore transmission network.
Bidding in Connecticut’s first offshore wind round closed on April 2. The competition is part of a solicitation for offshore wind, biogas and fuel cell plants that will be able to produce up to 899,250 MWh of electricity per year for the northeastern US state, with over 825,000 MWh coming from offshore wind.
Ørsted and Eversource are also partnering in the up to 800 MW Bay State offshore wind project near the coast of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. The scheme, which was last month awarded a covered project status under the FAST federal act, will include а 55 МW/110 MWh energy storage system by a unit of Japan’s NEC Corp (TYO:6701).
