US electric vehicle (EV) maker Rivian Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:RIVN) intends to have a wind turbine of at least 2.8 MW installed at its R1 vehicle factory in Normal, Illinois if the project gets approved by the town’s planning commission later this summer.
Rivian said in a statement on Friday that it has partnered with Apex Clean Energy to erect the turbine inside the vehicle test track on the east side of its manufacturing campus. The turbine will be less than 510 feet tall, with white, non-reflective blades. It will be able to produce almost 10 million kWh of power annually.
The EV company has commissioned studies on potential impacts from sound and shadow flicker and to threatened and endangered species, cultural resources and communication systems, it noted.
Rivian, which has pledged to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, installed a 783-kW solar canopy at the plant’s outbound charging yard earlier this year. It is scheduled to start power generation later this summer.
