UK-based renewable energy developer Renewable Energy Systems Ltd (RES) has secured a five-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract for the offshore transmission assets of the 183.6-MW Walney 1 offshore wind farm in the UK.
The contract has been awarded by the owner of the transmission assets, Blue Transmission, which is a consortium of 3i Group plc (LON:III) and a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp (TYO:8058), following a competitive bidding process. It is the first long-term maintenance contract on an operating offshore wind farm for RES.
Blue Transmission is owner of the links to a total of four wind farms in the UK -- Walney 1, Walney 2, Sheringham Shoal and London Array -- with a combined capacity of 1.3 GW.
The Walney 1 wind farm started operations in 2011. It uses 51 turbines of 3.6 MW each. Its offshore substation is linked by a 45-km (28 miles) undersea cable to the shore near Heysham, northwestern England.
