UK-based Renewable Energy Systems (RES) said on Tuesday that it has sold the exclusive marketing rights to an eagle detection technology to co-developer Boulder Imaging and certain private investors.
More specifically, RES has sold all the intellectual property held by IdentiFlight LLC in relation to an avian detection system that seeks to protect in-flight species, such as bald and golden eagles, from colliding with rotating wind turbine blades. The IdentiFlight technology uses cameras to detect flight near wind farm sites and if such activity is spotted, it initiates shutdown of the specific turbines.
RES has been working on the system with Colorado-based machine vision solutions expert Boulder Imaging since 2012. The latter has now acquired the assets through IdentiFlight International LLC, a joint venture with certain private investors.
“With IdentiFlight’s successful debut in 2016, the partnership with Boulder Imaging has reached the critical milestone where diverse stakeholders in utilities, wind farm operators, biologists and government regulators can capitalize on the best technology available to protect eagles,” said Paul Walker, CFO of RES in the Americas.
