RES Deutschland GmbH said today it has broken ground on a 10 MW/15 MWh battery storage project it is building for German utility Versorgungsbetriebe Bordesholm GmbH (VBB).
The company, a unit of UK-based developer Renewable Energy Systems Ltd (RES), won a tender for the delivery of the project at the start of 2018.
The facility will provide frequency stabilisation and will also be able to provide power to the municipality of Bordesholm from renewable energy sources in case of grid disruptions. The project is funded by the EU via the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
The company noted that 75% of the annual grid load in the municipality is already generated from renewable energy and the share is expected to reach 100% by 2020.
RES Deutschland managing director Dominique Guillou said that battery storage is a key element of the transition to 100% renewable energy.
