Swedish wind power company Rabbalshede Kraft AB said Thursday it signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Gothenburg-based Modvion AB to use the engineering designer’s modular wooden wind turbine towers for a planned wind farm project in Sweden.
Rabbalshede Kraft plans to order a supply of ten modular towers made of glued laminated timber (glulam) for its Fagremo wind project in Sweden’s Toreboda municipality.
If the project results in success, Modvion stands to deliver towers worth an estimated SEK 500 million-900 million (USD 52m/EUR 46.7m-USD 93.6m/EUR 84.1m) over the next five years, Rabbalshede Kraft said.
The Fagremo wind farm is designed to have turbines with 240 metres in height. Modvion’s modular tower solution will ease logistical difficulties, reduce costs for wind power and minimise weight, according to the press release.
“Steel is stronger than wood per volume, but our glulam wood is 55% stronger than steel per kilogram. The taller we build the more positive is the weight reduction. Further, replacing steel with wood reduces CO2-emissions”, Modvion CEO Otto Lundmand said.
