Pike Research sees USD-13bn market for smart grid renewables integration by 2018

Oct 30, 2012 - The market for smart grid technologies that support the integration of renewable energy will show steady growth over the next six years, reaching almost USD 13 billion (EUR 10bn) in 2018, according to Pike Research.

In 2012, the market is estimated to be worth USD 3.8 billion.

Smart grid technologies include microgrids, dynamic pricing systems, advanced energy storage as well as virtual power plants (VPPs) and are designed to facilitate the integration of renewable energy generation by utilities and grid operators. The market research firm says in its report that there are wide variations in the time frames for large-scale commercialisation of these technologies. For instance, utilities and grid operators have been offering demand response in some forms for decades. On the other hand, clear business models are yet to be demonstrated for advanced energy storage.
