Pacific Gas and Electric Co, the US electric utility held by PG&E Corp (NYSE:PCG), this week presented 75 MW of energy storage contracts for review and approval by the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
PG&E wants the projects to be realised due to a state requirement for investor-owned utilities to procure 1,325 MW of storage by 2020. Currently, the company’s share amounts to 580 MW. By the end of the year, PG&E expects some 30% of its retail power deliveries to come from renewables and it needs energy storage to integrate those intermittent sources.
The seven projects were chosen after PG&E issued a request for offers (RFO) to solicit proposals for energy storage schemes on December 1, 2014. The first of them are expected to become operational in May 2017.
