US geothermal company Ormat Technologies Inc (NYSE:ORA) on Thursday said its Rabbit Hill Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facility, with a capacity of around 10 MW, has become operational in Georgetown, Texas.
The facility will provide ancillary services and energy optimisation to the wholesale markets managed by the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the grid operator for most of Texas. It was designed and constructed by Ormat's subsidiary Viridity Energy Solutions Inc, which will own and operate the system that uses lithium-ion batteries.
LS Energy Solutions acted as system integrator for the project.
This is Ormat's first energy storage project in Texas and the fifth one for its energy storage and management services unit.
