Originoil, US DOE to develop algae feedstock standard
Sep 20, 2011 - US algae-to-biofuel technology firm Originoil Inc (OTC:OOIL) will collaborate with the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) of the US Department of Energy (DOE) to develop standards for producing biofuels and other products from algae biomass.
The cooperation will study how algae can add energy content to other feedstocks such as woody and herbaceous materials, the company said in a statement today. It is expected that the combined chemical and energy value of the whole formatted feedstock under a correct formula will be greater than the sum of its individual parts, Originoil said.
Using the whole algae feedstock is more energy-efficient than harvesting its oil products only for drop-in biofuels, and aids the centralisation of downstream processing, according to Originoil.
