February 28 (Renewables Now) - Ocean Winds and infrastructure fund manager Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) have won a 71,522-acre (28,944-ha) lease area to install an offshore wind farm in the New York Bight.

Through the Ocean Winds East LLC joint venture, the partners secured the OCS-A 0537 area, which has the potential to host up to 1.7 GW of wind turbine capacity, they said on Friday. Their provisional winning bid for the lease stands at USD 765 million (EUR 684.3m).

The specific area is located 38 miles off the coast of New York and 53 miles off New Jersey. It was awarded on Friday in an auction that lasted 64 rounds across three days, attracting bids from 14 different parties. The solicitation resulted in winning bids from six companies totalling USD 4.37 billion.

“This successful bid demonstrates the determination of Ocean Winds to be a major developer and operator of the offshore wind farms that will be a key source of much needed clean, reliable, renewable energy,” said Bautista Rodriguez Sanchez, CEO of Ocean Winds.

Ocean Winds is a Madrid-based 50/50 joint venture between EDP Renewables (ELI:EDPR) and Engie SA (EPA:ENGI).
