NSW Ports on Wednesday presented concept plans for a port facility in the Australian state of New South Wales intended to support the development of offshore wind projects.
The proposed facility will be located at Port Kembla’s Outer Harbour in the state's Illawarra coastal region.
“Port Kembla is close to Greater Sydney’s growing population and surrounded by industrial lands. It is within the NSW Government’s proposed Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone and adjacent to the Federal Government’s proposed Illawarra offshore wind development zone,” said Marika Calfas, chief executive of NSW Ports, which holds the long-term leases for Port Kembla and Port Botany.
Last year, a call for registration of interest for developing large-scale projects within the Illawarra Renewable Energy Zone attracted AUD 43 billion (USD 29.6bn/EUR 27.7bn) worth of potential investments. A total of 44 projects drew interest, including eight offshore wind projects.
Delivering port infrastructure for offshore wind in time will require significant collaboration between the government, industry and the community over the coming years, the Port Kembla CEO also said.
