Nova Innovation deploys 2nd tidal turbine in Shetland
Nova Innovation Ltd has now deployed two 100-kW turbines in the Bluemull Sound, Shetland, which make the world's first fully-operational offshore tidal array, the Scottish tidal energy company said.
Nova installed the first turbine at the site in March. It is partnering on the Shetland Tidal Array project, whose first phase will consist of a total of three 100-kW Nova M100 turbines, with Belgian renewable energy firm ELSA. The first device has been generating up to full power and across all tidal conditions, the Scottish company noted.
Nova says that the fully-operational, commercial, grid-connected system heralds a new era for tidal energy as a long-term source of predictable renewable power. It cited estimates of the UK Carbon Trust, according to which a global tidal energy market worth GBP 126 billion (USD 165bn/EUR 150bn) could be developed by 2050.
